12th Episcopal District Lay Organization

LAY

The purpose and objective of the lay organization is to organize and train the laity of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The goal is so that each lay person would utilize, to the maximum, their abilities and skills granted by God. Improving and extending God’s kingdom by creating happiness, peace, and harmony among members.

It is our mission to instill in the membership of the church a love and appreciation for the history, traditions, principles and development of African Methodism by encouraging, motivating and educating all lay persons.

Other current goals:

Host the 31st Connectional Lay Biennial in Little Rock, AR July 25-31, 2009 Provide education on HIV/AIDS and sickle cell awarenessContinue to support voter registration/education with the AME V-AlertPlan and training retreat and have a Lay/Christian education retreatContinue to give financial support to our school, Shorter College

The lay organization and the A.M.E. Church lost a legacy in the 12th District, Mr. Rucker E. Clayton died on August 7, 2004. He was a big supporter of the Lay organization and the A.M.E. Church. He served as Episcopal District Lay president from 1963-1987. Mr. Clayton and his wife, Carrie, helped start the Economic Development Fund in the 12th District under Bishop H. H, Brookins.
